Description:
Performs a variety of diagnostic imaging procedures, for patients of all ages, which requires the safe and effective use of radionuclides. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSEach Employee consistently demonstrates the following essential functions: Verifies patient's identity (by two means) and pregnancy/ breast feeding status prior to performing radiopharmaceutical administration. Performs venipuncture using aseptic technique. Documents verification and injection site on patient's Nuclear Medicine worksheet. Demonstrates the ability to assess a clinical situation, consider alternatives, choose an appropriate course of action, and if necessary, seeks assistance. Prepares patients for procedures, obtains pertinent medical history and provides explanation of procedure to patients/ family members. Anticipates needs for required supplies and equipment prior to start of procedure. Confirms physician's orders and assesses appropriateness of procedure based on clinical indications. Follows up on any discrepancies with physician prior to performing procedure. Utilizes protective shielding and prescribed safety standards for radioactive sources in accordance with department policies and NYSDOH regulations (i.e. use of syringe shields, leaded containers and gloves, lab coats, wears film badge and ring badge). Demonstrates work habits that support the principles of ALARA. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding to select, prepare and assay radioisotopes according to manufacturer's direction and radiation safety policies and procedures. Performs radionuclide procedures according to department protocol on patients of all ages, inclusive of organ imaging, function studies and computer analysis. Demonstrates the ability to modify procedures when necessary due to the patients condition and/or equipment's limitations. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding to effectively operate and perform and document quality control procedures on nuclear medicine equipment including: gamma cameras, computers, medical spectrometer, dose calibrator, survey meters and dosimeters. Responsible for ordering prescribed radioisotopes and cold kits as needed per schedule. Maintains records of radioisotope receipt, use, storage and disposal in accordance with department protocols and NYSDOH regulations (including performing surveys, wipe tests). Schedules nuclear medicine procedure according to department protocols; taking into consideration the departments staffing and equipment availability. Coordinates procedures to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency of staff, cameras and radiopharmaceuticals. Assists with routine department maintenance tasks (i.e.: cleaning, restocking supplies, archiving patient's image data, notifying supervisor of low inventory). Ensures correct charges for all procedures using barcode tracking/computer, knowledgeable of RMS function sets and data entry. Properly transmits images to PACS with the correct accession number assigned. Utilizes modality worklist for imaging procedures. Answer telephone promptly and uses proper telephone etiquette. Demonstrates appropriate interactions and communication with all customers (ie. patients, families, physicians and co-workers). Able to troubleshoot equipment problems and notify appropriate personnel regarding equipment failure. Provides resource to Nuclear Medicine students by demonstration and explanation of procedures; functions as a preceptor in orientation of new personnel. Accepts responsibility for on call status as assigned. Requirements Education BS Degree in Nuclear Medicine preferred. AAS degree in an Allied Health Science and the successful completion of the Certification program from an approved school in Nuclear Medicine. Experience One year of Nuclear Medicine. Required Certification/Licensure NMTCB and/or ARRT (NM). NYS License. Current BLS (Basic Life Support). Special Skills Must be computer literate. Physical Demands Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting of patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 35 lbs., over 35 lbs., assisting devices or other employee assistance recommended. Requires normal visual acuity. Age Specific Competencies Required-See attachment. Working Conditions Exposure to radiation, infectious diseases, body fluids, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
