Job Summary

The Vascular Sonographer performs basic to advanced ultrasound services for patients. These may include upper/lower arterial and venous Doppler, Carotid duplex Doppler, abdominal Doppler, transcranial Doppler, and segmental pressures. They must know approved clinical protocols for each ultrasound examination. The sonographer must examine the patient's full clinical history to identify the examination's purpose. They should frame the clinical question the examination aims to answer and expand the examination as needed.

Essential Functions of the Role

  • Prepare patients for procedures and obtain their clinical history. Include related physical findings and pertinent lab data. Fit the imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive diagnostic data for the interpreting provider.
  • Perform basic to advanced vascular ultrasound procedures using various equipment and techniques. Provide necessary measurements for accurate, high-quality results.
  • Identify and define vascular abnormalities. Extend the examination scope as needed. Deviate from standard techniques when necessary. Correlate invasive and noninvasive test results with related anatomy and function.
  • May assist physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms. Perform vascular ultrasound studies to aid in complex procedures.
  • Record statistics and perform daily maintenance of the vascular lab and its equipment, reporting all malfunctions as appropriate.
  • Work closely with the sonography team to ensure quality processes and protocols are followed. Assist with IAC accreditation activities as delegated. Implement protocols as new technology evolves. Ensure system vascular ultrasound standards are followed.
  • Act as a resource to other staff, physicians, and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures, and studies to optimize patient care.
  • Work closely with other sonographers to ensure adherence to quality processes and protocols.

  • Knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic methods, instrumentation, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to explain the purpose of the ultrasound examination to the patient and answer patients' questions.
  • Knowledge of proper infection control, including precautionary procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively - both orally and in writing - with healthcare providers, including other sonographers, physicians, and nurses.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Skilled utilization of computers and medical equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION - Grad of an Accredited Program or 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification
  • EXPERIENCE - Less than 1 Year of Experience
  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION -

Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire/transfer.

Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS), Registered Vascular Tech (RVT): Must have RVT through ARDMS or RVS from CCI.
