About the facility: Pittsburgh VAMC
It is an acute care and inpatient behavioral health facility with 146 beds available for medical, neurological, and surgical care in the main facility and 78 secure, private psychiatric beds in the consolidation building. This campus also receives the most outpatient visits of all VAPHS facilities.

The University Drive campus of VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System is located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Events Center.

Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

• The therapeutic radiologic technologist (or radiation therapy technologist) shall receive and interpret prescriptions/instructions from the treating physician and carry out complex assignments while under general supervision of the supervisory radiation therapist.
• The technologist shall prepare imaging, simulation, treatment, and ancillary equipment for patient use. This involves recording a series of measurements, including checks of the radiation field, to ensure basic specifications are met daily.
• The technologist shall maintain appropriate markings on the patient's skin to facilitate exact positioning for desired results and cushions/shields patients as appropriate. Procedures will be explained to patients, securing the confidence and cooperation of patients, and explaining procedures while following ALARA principles.
• Will operate imaging/sealed radiation equipment.
• Shall limit radiation field using lead cutouts or multi leaf collimation (MLC). May assist radiation oncologists with bolus design according to physician's direction.
• Shall position patients in the CT scanner and acquire specific data sets prescribed by the physicist or physician. Acquires the necessary tumor volume to be used in treatment planning. Gives the CTS to the radiation Oncologist for tumor volumes to be outlined. Shall set technical factors for radiotherapy procedures, and will set up and operate accessory equipment.
• Will perform timeout procedure and positively identify each patient before providing treatment.
• The technologist will operate the simulator and take high quality radiographs to accurately localize tumor volume as required.
• Shall accomplish portal filming, localizing topographical landmarks. We'll instruct accurate contours of the patient's body and perform necessary measurements utilized by the physicist.

Qualifications

• Must be a graduate of an approved program in Therapeutic Radiologic Technology, evidenced by certification through the ARRT in (T) radiation therapy.
  • 1 year of experience knowledge of overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment.
  • 1 year of experience delivery of prescribed therapeutic radiation for cancer and abnormal cell growth treatments.
  • 1 year of experience three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
  • 1 year of experience Education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distribution and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.
