Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital

Department: Ultrasound

Position is located: Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital

Work Type: Full Time

Hours Per Week: 32 Hours per Week

Work Schedule: No Hours Assigned

This position is eligible for a $10,000 sign on bonus for new graduates and a $15,000 sign on bonus for Techs with 2 years or more of experience.

*Current employees of any Northern Light Health Organization or those with service breaks less than a year are not eligible for a sign on bonus*

Summary :

Under the direction of the Manager Radiology, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs diagnostic ultrasonic procedures at a technical level not requiring direct supervision.

Responsibilities :

  • Coordinates schedule with receptionist to complete departmental workload.
  • Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships and good rapport with all inter-relating hospital referrals or commercial agencies.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of equipment in ultrasound area.
  • Maintains adequate supplies.
  • Recommends action necessary for improvement of overall performance quality of department.
  • Demonstrates the appropriate skills and ability to assess, treat, and/or care of patients based on the physical condition of the patient.
  • Explains the test to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
  • Correlates clinical history with the test performed.
  • Consults with referring physician regarding patients previous history and decision of appropriate sonographic exam required.
  • Performs ultrasound studies: neurosonology, echocardiography, abdominal, obstetrical and gynecological exams and peripheral Doppler exams as ordered.
  • Is able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Seeks to participate in extra projects during downtime as needed.
  • Shows flexibility with covering shifts to accommodate departmental needs.
  • Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
  • Recognizes the significance of all structures visualized on the display screen and can differentiate artifact from normal or pathological processes.
  • Recognizes electronic equipment limitations.
  • Determines if the anatomy is normal or abnormal, and if abnormal, is able to delineate the abnormality and to extend the scope of the study appropriately.
  • Rotates call with others to provide service after hours.
  • Provides technical and patient aid for surgical biopsy and aspiration procedures.

Other Information :

  • Registry from an accredited two-year allied health program or two years of college with emphasis on the biological sciences. Satisfactory completion of formal ultrasonic training program (1 year) or equivalent experience. Program should be AMA approved.
  • LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS: Registered or registry eligible with the Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) and/or Registry of Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers (RDCS). Being a member in good standing of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is desirable.
  • BLS Required.
