Radiation Safety OfficerFLSA Status: ExemptPosition Type: Full TimePay Type: SalaryPay Rate: $125,000 - $140, 000.00Reports To: Pharmacy Manager Position SummaryThe Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for establishing, implementing, and overseeing the radiation safety program at PharmaLogic Facilities in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The RSO serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and ensures the safe handling, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials used in radiopharmaceutical compounding and distribution.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesRegulatory ComplianceMaintain and administer the pharmacy's radioactive materials licenseEnsure full compliance with NRC, state radiation control program, DOT regulationsMaintain, and implement the Radiation Protection Program (RPP) and all associated SOPsPrepare and submit license amendments, renewal applications, and regulatory reports as requiredParticipate in the PharmaLogic Quality and Regulatory audit programServe as primary point of contact during regulatory inspections and auditsRadiation Safety Program ManagementImplement and enforce ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles throughout all operationsConduct routine radiation surveys of work areas, equipment, and personnelOversee dosimetry program assign, track, and evaluate personnel radiation dose records (TLD/OSL badges)Investigate and document radiation incidents, overexposures, and spills; implement corrective actionsManage radioactive waste program including segregation, decay-in-storage, and disposal proceduresTraining & EducationDeliver initial and annual radiation safety training to all radiation workersMaintain training records in compliance with license requirementsTrain staff on proper use of PPE, shielding, and radiation detection instrumentationProvides clinical support for customers with radiopharmaceutical questions.Radioactive Materials ManagementOversee receipt, inventory, storage, and transfer of radioactive materialsEnsure proper labeling, packaging, and shipping of radiopharmaceuticals per DOT/IATA regulationsMaintain accurate and current radioactive material inventory logsCoordinate with radiopharmaceutical manufacturers and generators on material specificationsEquipment & Facility OversightOversee calibration and maintenance of radiation detection instruments (dose calibrators, Geiger counters, well counters)Ensure hot lab design and shielding meet regulatory and safety standardsEvaluate and approve new procedures or equipment involving radioactive materialsQualificationsRequiredMinimum 35 years of experience in radiation safety, preferably in a nuclear pharmacy or nuclear medicine settingThorough knowledge of NRC regulations (10 CFR Parts 19, 20, 30, 35) and/or applicable Agreement State regulationsFamiliarity with DOT hazardous materials regulations (49 CFR) as they apply to radioactive materials shippingExperience managing a radioactive materials licenseDemonstrated knowledge of ALARA principles and radiation protection practicesPreferredExperience with PET radiopharmaceuticals (F-18, Ga-68, Zr-89) and generator-produced radionuclides (Tc-99m, Mo-99)Familiarity with USP standards for radiopharmaceutical compoundingSkills & CompetenciesStrong working knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and dosimetryExcellent written and verbal communication skills for regulatory correspondence and staff trainingHigh attention to detail and commitment to documentation accuracyAbility to respond calmly and effectively to radiation incidents or emergenciesStrong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple compliance deadlinesProficiency with radiation safety software and inventory management systemsPhysical RequirementsAbility to wear radiation monitoring equipment and PPEMay be required to lift shielded containers (up to 30 lbs)Frequent standing, bending, and working in a controlled-access hot lab environmentWorking ConditionsWorks primarily in a licensed nuclear pharmacy hot lab and ancillary areasSubject to radiation exposure within established NRC occupational dose limitsMay require early morning hours consistent with radiopharmaceutical production and delivery schedulesOn-call availability for radiation incidents or regulatory emergencies
