FLSA Status Non-ExemptJob Role Summary The Echocardiography Technologist administers routine/stress echocardiograms on inpatients and outpatients, recognizing any abnormal/normal echo patterns by 2-Dimensional, M-Mode, or Doppler echographs.Essential Functions and Responsibilities Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi Health values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development, and Excellence.Assumes the responsibilities specified by the Technical Director and is responsible for the performance of clinical examinations and other tasksExplains echocardiogram procedures and risk factors to patientsResponds promptly and efficiently to medical emergencies which may ariseInitiates and/or assists in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as assisting in code situationsResponsible for preparing final report and mailing to proper destinationAdministers routine/stress echocardiograms on inpatients and outpatients, recognizing any abnormal/normal echo patterns by 2-Dimensional, M-Mode, or Doppler echographsProduces copy of CD of echo images for computer storage or teaching purposesConducts bedside echocardiograms in NICU, intensive care units, on medical floors, or in emergency roomDiscusses abnormal tests, both stress and echo, with physiciansUses off-line computer to quantify abnormalitiesStudies heart physiology to determine normal/abnormal patternsTransports equipment to appropriate locations and conducts tests bedside for in-hospital patientsPerforms pre/post exercise stress echograms and analyzes data on computerAlters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e., adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neo-natal, adult) as described in the area/unit age specific and/or job specific competencies.Maintains age specific and job specific competencies as described according to department/area and unit specific competenciesJob Requirements Technical staff will be considered a "trainee" until they have performed at least 600 echos/Doppler examinationsCompletion of an Ultrasound or Echocardiography Technology certificate program, or minimum of 2 years technical experience in an Echocardiography Clinic settingOn-the-job training for advanced procedures providedFurther advancement is dependent upon certification by appropriate certifying bodyAll members of the Echo technical staff must be on path to become credentialed in echocardiography from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)Must document at least 15 hours of echocardiography related continuing education over a period of three years; yearly accumulated continuing education must be kept on file and available for submission upon requestKnowledge, Skills & Abilities Skills in: use of echo/ultrasound equipment (M-Mode and Two-Dimensional, cross-sectional echocardiographs, copy to CD, video tape recorders), use of off-time computer analysis systems, computer data storage, effective interpersonal communication, patient assessment prior to/during/following diagnostic proceduresKnowledge of: the physics of ultrasound machines, cardiac anatomy/physiologyAbility to follow oral/written directions, work independently within guidelines without direct supervision, work effectively under pressure (i.e., patients in stress/crisis, patient volume)Demonstrated expertise in basic echocardiography proceduresKnowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients servedMust demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age specific needsAbility to use age appropriate communication skillsAge appropriate cognitive abilities, skills, techniques, and communications are detailed in the department/area/unit job specific/age specific competencies
