Create and analyze diagnostic images of patients’ hearts and the surrounding system. Echocardiography technologists—also called echocardiographers or cardiac sonographers—use ultrasound equipment to produce pictures of the heart’s chambers, valves, and vessels. They then examine the results for abnormalities indicative of potentially concerning diseases or conditions. Some may perform echocardiograms on fetal hearts and collaborate with physicians to identify cardiac problems before birth.
Echocardiography technologists should be intimately familiar with ultrasound equipment systems and related technologies in order to produce the clearest pictures possible. As they need to interact with patients who may be in pain and/or discuss possibly personal or sensitive information, these professionals must also be empathetic, compassionate, and emotionally stable.
