PET Technician Jobs in Maine

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Technician is an integral part of the Radiology industry. They are responsible for operating PET scan equipment, which involves injecting patients with radioactive drugs and then using a scanner to produce images of the body's internal functions. These images are used by doctors to diagnose and monitor various diseases and conditions. PET Technicians work closely with radiologists, oncologists, and a variety of other medical professionals to ensure that patients are receiving the most accurate and effective treatment. They are also responsible for maintaining the equipment, following safety procedures, and providing a calm and comforting environment for patients.

Important skills for a PET Technician include technical aptitude, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and compassion for patients. They should hold an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology and must become certified by passing the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination. Prior to becoming a PET Technician, individuals often acquire experience in related roles such as a Radiologic Technologist, Nuclear Medicine Technologist, or a Medical Imaging Assistant.
