They are responsible for prepping patients for radiologic procedures (like X-rays, MRI scans, or radiation therapy), monitoring patient's vital signs during procedures, administering medications and contrast agents, ensuring the patient's understanding of procedures, and providing aftercare. They should also have a firm understanding of radiology technology and safety. Some may choose to advance their career by becoming certified through the Association for Radiologic & Imaging Nursing (ARIN). Prior to becoming a Radiology Nurse, a person may have roles such as a Staff Nurse in a hospital or another healthcare facility, a Clinical Nurse, or a Medical-Surgical Nurse. These roles lend practical nursing experience and exposure to various medical scenarios which are invaluable in the field of Radiology Nursing.
